i have a 82 omc with 120 hp 2.5 4 cyl that heats up occasionally at idle. went to the boat shop and asked for a new thermostat to install myself. asked about the cost of them changing the water pump the quote is $1000. "replace the vertical shaft". i see on forum where bill says nothing pumps like a stringer and laymen changing impellers like there isnt much to it. can someone comment on this? temp gage slowly goes to 260 from the normal of 160. ibelieve i could change a pump. thank you for the help.

temp gage slowly goes to 260 from a normal of 160 and will go down when speed is increased to faster than idle. i replaced the thermostat today and will try out this week. i have a manual and can do the work. thank you for the help. if it is needed i will get a pump with a housing and replace it.

When speed increases shaft turns faster thus more water to engine I think impeller is fine pull of the hose comming from back to t stat and check water flow can also use a clear line on this too so you can see the water I had a restriction in my riser only one causing mine to overheat advanced timing can cause it restriction in exhaust manifolds can cause it before I tear into the intermediate I would type in overheating in the topic part of this forum and read on it solved my problems here...good luck...

also if tem goes up and then comes down the t stat is opening up or it would just keep going up? replacing t stat wont put you behind but process of elimination can get expensive...pull caps off the exhaust manifolds in back and run water or hose thru there low pressure and see if you have restriction?
