I have a 1983 3 liter OMC that has a tilt that goes down very well, but with tilting up has problems. With engine running it comes up slow or needs to be manually assisted. Once up the tilt motor continues to run. With engine off the tilt up still needs manual assist but once up stops. There is a slight oil leak on the tilt clutch housing at the rear. Any ideas what I need to troubleshoot & fix this? Is this the hammer blow coupling perhaps?

fist thing get a manual i have the seloc it goes to 1986.second buy a seal kit for the tilt housing. make sure you have a fully charged battery fully charged.take off the tilt housing cover and let all the water and gunk out than remove the clutch soak it over night in the most powerfull solvent you can get your hands on install all the seals.install the rubber seal on the cover.blow off all the solvent and than soak the clutch for a hour in 30 weight oil, install the clutch, than pack the whole tilt housing with greese.i know it calls for 30 weight oil trust me pack it with greese.after your done with that greese the trunions they are under the rubber bumpers.just take a screwdriver and pry them off each side has a greese fitting youll see the greese come out of the trunion do both sides.cross your fingers and have someone hit the tilt button if it goes up easy your done if not clean all the electrical connections on the port side in the bilge.clean the connections on the tilt motor.if that doesnt fix it than run a wire straight from the battery to the tilt seleniod.if that doesnt fix it than a new tilt motor is in your future.do not run the motor with the tilt up ever.when you have the outdrive up there is a whole in the backside there is a greese fitting in there shoot greese in there 4 or 5 squirts will do and greese the steering gears also.good luck.
